The Smart Way Bus is the regional public transportation service operated by Valley Metro. It links the Roanoke Valley and the New River Valley for a fare of only $4.00, each way.
The Smart Way begins service at 3rd Street Station, with stops at the Hotel Roanoke, the Roanoke Regional Airport, two park and ride lots along Interstate 81 at exits 140 and 118A, Laurel St (at the shelter going to Tech and across the street from the shelter going to Roanoke), the Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center, Main Street in downtown Blacksburg, and the Virginia Tech Transit Center on the Campus of Virginia Tech.

Valley Metro & the Smart Way Bus are pleased to provide free wireless Internet service on our Smart Way commuter buses.
Wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi) lets you access the Internet without cables or wires. With a wireless networking card in your Laptop, PDA, or any Wi-Fi enabled device, you can go online while traveling to your destination on the Smart Way Bus. Using the Smart Way’s Wi-Fi service is similar to connecting with other wireless internet services in cafes, office buildings, or other wireless hotspots. The network utilizes the 802.11b/g standard for wireless communications, offering speeds up to 11Mbps.
As the configuration of each manufacturer’s device is unique, please refer to your documentation for connection instructions. Valley Metro staff and bus operators can not be responsible for assisting you in making changes to your devices.

Valley Metro makes no warranty that the service or that any information, software, or other material accessible on the service is free of viruses, worms, Trojan horses or other harmful components. By connecting, the user acknowledges and accepts the risks associated with public access to the internet and public use of an unsecured wireless network.
- Service provided “AS AVAILABLE”. Smart way Wifi FAQ
No, This a free service and there are no registration requirements.
The Smartway’s Wi-Fi service can accommodate basic internet browsing, checking and sending of e-mails, streaming multi-media, downloads, and file transfers. Due to the characteristics of the cellular network on which it operates, there may be locations where service is intermittent or unavailable. In addition, overall connection speed may be affected by the number of Wi-Fi users on the bus.
You may have to connect to the Wi-Fi access point called SmartwayAP1 or SmartwayAP2 depending on where you sit on the bus. For advanced instructions on how to set or modify your Wi-Fi network connections, please consult the manual or contact technical support for your particular wireless device.
