New Bus Shelters Coming to Roanoke

If you've traveled through town recently, you may have noticed construction at a few bus stops. Soon, Roanoke will have new shelters at four busy locations, made possible by funding from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) through the City of Roanoke.

Protection from the elements is important for riders, but bus shelters offer more than just cover. They make stops more recognizable, helping new riders navigate the system more easily. Shelters also serve as branding for the transit system, the city, and the neighborhood. More importantly, they signal investment in transit riders, providing a safer, more dignified waiting experience.

Three of Roanoke's newest shelters will help tie together the Southeast Roanoke neighborhood. The shelters along Jamison Avenue will feature a pollinator-themed design by a local artist, celebrating Roanoke's title as a Bee City USA. Right now, you can see the new concrete pads at Fire Station #6, across the street at the Dollar General, and at 6th Street. In addition to the neighborhood-specific artwork, all shelters will include a bench, ADA-accessible space, a trash can, and solar-powered lighting.

If you've traveled on Orange Avenue NW in the past month, you've likely noticed construction at King Street, near the BP Station. The construction is done, and this busy stop along Route 32 will soon feature a new large shelter, complete with a sidewalk connection, a bench, a trash can, and lighting.

These stops are now prepped and ready for shelter installations. The structures are currently being manufactured and will arrive within the next two months. Each shelter will be delivered in one piece, allowing for quick and easy installation-you might just notice a new shelter appear along your commute one day!

These shelters are part of our broader effort to improve transit across the region. By upgrading stops, expanding service, and listening to rider feedback, we're making public transportation more accessible, reliable, and comfortable for everyone. And we're not stopping here.
