MetroFLX Turns One!

On January 22, 2024, Valley Metro launched MetroFLX, a new microtransit service designed to meet the most common request from riders - extended evening hours. MetroFLX is a door-to-door, flexible bus service that operates after fixed-route buses stop running, from 8:45 PM to 12:45 AM, six days per week. It also provides Sunday service from 9 AM to 6 PM, marking the Valley's first Sunday bus service in 40 years. This month, we are celebrating one year of MetroFLX in Roanoke.

Moving the Valley

MetroFLX has become a vital link to key destinations, including Roanoke Memorial Hospital and Valley View Mall. The service is helping people get to and from work - many of whom previously had to depend on friends or expensive rideshare options.

Several small business owners have praised MetroFLX for allowing them to retain employees who previously struggled with transportation. One restaurant owner shared that some employees would start a job assuming they could find a ride home, only to quit later due to the stress of relying on others for transportation. Meanwhile, one Roanoke resident (who asked to remain anonymous) noted that his daily $22 Uber commute to work has now been replaced by a $1.75 MetroFLX ride. Public transit expands job opportunities for workers and broadens the hiring pool for businesses.

Looking Forward

We have learned a lot from our first 12 months. As we collect more data and hear feedback from MetroFLX riders, we will continue tweaking the service to better meet the needs of the community. In our second year, our commitment remains the same - providing accessible, flexible, and reliable bus service for the Roanoke Valley.
